Optical Advisers
The Role
An Optical Adviser at D&A enjoys a very varied day that is centered on delivering incredible service to all customers in a professional, friendly and caring way. Your role as an Optical Adviser will be to spend quality time with customers to ensure we meet their eyecare needs. Our stores are not quick self-service environments - they are designed to make our customers feel at ease. We passionately believe in exceeding customer expectations - every day in every way.
Working for Dollond & Aitchison is not a job. It is a career.
Your Training
At D&A, we believe in giving every individual all the support we can. We appreciate that people have different aspirations. Our individually tailored approach will allow you to develop at a pace that suits you.
Our training and development are carefully structured to maximize your career potential. Now that we are accredited with Optical Retailing NVQ's, we can offer Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships to all our Optical Advisers (OA's). We are the only optical chain whose training has been accredited.
It all starts with a four week initial Programme, where we welcome you to D&A and help you familiarise yourself with the branch environment. Then you will start your Apprenticeship Programme and NVQ Level 2 in Customer Service. This includes 7 days off-the-job training at our custom built training centre where some of our colleagues make friends for life. You will also be supported by a personal buddy and your Branch Manager.
Once you have completed your NVQ Level 2 and have some OA experience all our colleagues can become a Senior Optical Adviser - we encourage all colleagues to achieve their NVQ Level 3, an Advanced Apprenticeship. This normally takes around 18 months to complete but as a consequence of your increased skill set your basic salary will be typically 30% higher than when you started with D&A.
We aren't the only ones who think our training is outstanding. We have won many Awards for training at D&A. Here are a few examples: National Training Awards - 2004 NTA (the only optical retail chain to have received this top training award), People in Retail 2006 (Training & Career Development), and more recently, National Finalists for the EDGE Employer Awards for our Apprenticeship Programme.
We recognise that some colleagues may join D&A with previous optical experience but also that for others it may be the beginning of a new career journey. Our ongoing training and development will ensure all your needs are met. To show our commitment to your personal development, we close every branch for an hour each week to concentrate on training you.
Your Career
We believe in giving every individual all the support we can. The Optical Adviser career path allows you to continually develop your skills and knowledge within our company. As National Training Award winners, D&A are committed to your ongoing development.
Upon completion of the Optical Adviser training, your career doesn't stop there. 80% of our Managers are promoted from within the business. This is how committed we are to developing our own people to become our future Managers.
D&A boast a training initiative called Masterclass - a suite of programmes designed to develop our Optical Adviser colleagues to fulfil their potential in becoming our Branch Managers of the future. We offer a Bronze, Silver and Gold Programme; each carefully designed to ensure colleagues are given the best training in terms of management skills, coaching, leadership and commercial awareness which will also soon be externally accredited.
