D&A smash fundraising target

Moorfields Children's Eye Hospital
Dollond & Aitchison's Charity of the Year for 2006 was Moorfields Eye Hospital. At the start of the year a challenging £75,000 was pledged to support the development of the new international children's eye centre that the Hospital was building.
Colleagues throughout D&A The Opticians really got behind the appeal. A range of activities took place including sponsored swims and walks, running marathons, riding bikes, baking cakes, organising raffles and fancy dress to name but a few! At the end of March 2007, D&A were incredibly proud to announce that over £200,000 had been raised. Almost three times the original target!
On the 25th January 2007, 32 colleagues from D&A attended a Thank You Ceremony at the new children's centre which has been named after its lead donor, Richard Desmond. On touring this specialist centre, it became apparent that it had been built around the needs of children and their families. A floor has been dedicated to research, looking into ways to fight childhood blindness and accommodation facilities have been provided so that families can stay together whilst their children are being treated.
It was rewarding to see how the money raised has been used and the impact the centre will have on improving the lives of children not only in this country but from around the world.
This amazing sum of money, nearly triple the company's original target, has been used towards the construction and kit-out of two children's play and relaxation areas within the centre, which, in recognition of the contribution, have been named after D&A.
