The Richard Desmond Children’s Eye Centre Update
The Richard Desmond Children’s Eye Centre (RDCEC) was officially opened in February 2007, by Her Majesty the Queen. Since then, the new centre has made a huge contribution in treating NHS children with eye disease.
In excess of 22,000 outpatient clinic appointments have been provided and over 1,300 operations have been performed in the new centre. In addition, over 400 children have been seen on an accident and emergency basis and the building has been nominated for and won numerous awards.
Among the first things that children mention to us about the new centre are the bright colours and the play areas. Having space designed specifically around play and integrated into the clinic waiting areas is fantastic. Children who attend the building regularly look forward to coming and children who are attending for the first time are amazed at the facilities. The clinical staff too notice the benefit of seeing children who are calm and at ease. Compared to the old building children are more co-operative and relaxed when undergoing examination or performing tests. Below are some quotes from two of the members of our dedicated play team...
